In the Kitchen

New Horizon is proud to offer two cooking program, our lunch program for beginners and our advanced culinary skills program (this is our take home menu that is available for purchase).

Our beginner program is a great opportunity for some of our clients to begin learning how to prepare simple foods for themselves and others, as well as familiarizing themselves with common items found in the kitchen. Participants will begin to:

  • learn simple food preparation tehniques (peeling, chopping, rinsing, shredding)

  • prepare easy meals with support (if necessary)

  • identify condiments, cutlery, and items within in the kitchen

  • set the table and practice proper table etiquette

  • help with clean-up (wiping tables, sweeping, using the dishwasher)

Some menu items include: pizza, hot dogs, fries, cookies, grilled cheese, etc. (Each meal includes a drink, main, side, and dessert)

Our advanced cooking program is an opportunity for young adults to learn how to prepare foods that they can share at home and their contribution to the meal planning during the week. Participants will begin to:

  • learn various food preparation techniques (stove and oven use)

  • learn about the uses of small appliances, kitchen gadget and tools (rice cooker, food processor, emersion blender, juicer, etc)

  • prepare a complex meal with limited support

  • assemble meals, label, package and prepare for transportation

  • help with clean-up (washing, drying, putting things away)

Some examples of our menu include (main course dishes, appetizers, and desserts, more specifically: lasagna, pizza, lentil salsa, hamburgers, chicken cutlets, lentil stew, pasta dishes, beef teriyaki stir-fry, etc.   

Please note: Our lunch program is on Tuesdays and is mandatory. Our advanced cooking menu is optional and available for purchase.
