Our Vision...

New Horizon is dedicated to providing support to our special needs clients in a way that offers them an equal opportunity to participate fully within our local community. We strive to achieve our greatest potential by developing our confidence, independence, emotional and self-regulation, social skills, problem solving, and overall quality of life through hands-on, real life experiences.

At New Horizon, we are a team, equals, mutually respected peers who listen to one another and are here to give each other advice and guidance. We work at breaking down the power dynamics that our clients are used to from childhood and work on what it truly means to be an adult and how we all contribute at home and in our communities; finding purpose and joy in our lives!

We strive to build meaningful relationships within our community in order to provide greater opportunities for integration, entertainment, volunteer placements, and to help breakdown the stigma of disABILITIES.

New Horizon is proud to serve its clients, representing their voice, advocating for their needs, and showcasing their abilities within our local community. It is thanks to the support and kindness of others that we are given the opportunities to thrive.

Our Goal....

Our goal is to support the needs of each individual client by promoting their confidence, independence, emotional development, communication skills, or any areas of need in a fun, safe, calm and consistent environment.

In collaboration with the family’s support, we often use group instruction to target sensitive topics rather than target what one individual may be going through to better support them in a healthy, judgement free setting.

We use laughter and games to build meaningful connections and friendships. Listening can be hard but having fun is a great way to get to know one another and bond without all the social awkwardness and complexities of social interactions (i.e eye contact).

Participants are always encouraged to try new things, often surpassing even their own expectations. Positive praise, proactive measures, and natural reinforcers are all ways we work together to achieve our goals.

As a society, we tend to do two thing: focus on the problem and moving too fast.

Our goals:

1) Work to their strengths, not their weaknesses. 2) Slow down and listen. Allow for processing time (give them a chance to process the information and answer you, not everything has to be so immediate). Remember: All behaviours are a form of communication!
